Osteoporosis occurs most commonly in women who are past menopause. An estimated 40% of women over age 50 will suffer a fracture because of osteoporosis. So how do you know if you are at greater risk for a fracture?
The best way is through a bone mineral density test. It can help your doctor determine if you are at risk. According to National Osteoporosis Foundation guidelines, the following women should be tested:
- All postmenopausal women under the age of 65 who have one or more additional risk factors for osteoporotic fracture (besides menopause)
- All women 65 and older regardless of additional risk factors
- Postmenopausal women with fracture(s)
